Updating Indigenous Status

Update Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status in AIR

Indigenous status affects vaccination scheduling and eligibility for additional funded vaccines under the NIP. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have access to additional vaccines, earlier schedules, and extended age ranges for certain vaccines.

Self-Identification and Consent

Indigenous status is self-identified information. Always:

  • Ask the patient directly (do not assume)
  • Obtain consent before recording or updating
  • Respect the patient's response
  • Use the standard Australian Institute of Health and Welfare question

How to Update

  1. Open the patient's profile (must have green AIR badge)
  2. Find the Individual Indicators card
  3. Click the Indigenous Status button in the card header

Update indigenous status sheet

  1. Select the appropriate status:
    • Aboriginal
    • Torres Strait Islander
    • Both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
    • Neither Aboriginal nor Torres Strait Islander
  2. Submit the update

Updating indigenous status may change the patient's due vaccine list and vaccine eligibility. Review due vaccines after updating.
